In a large bowl mix together the shortening, sugar, and buttermilk. In a separate bowl, sift together the salt, flour, and baking soda. Stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture until well combined. Fold the rhubarb, orange zest, and walnuts. Pour the batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the topping ingredients and sprinkle over the batter.
