Our not-to-be-missed experiences in the South Central region of Wisconsin are those that make memories. A perfect example would be the city of Spring Green, which brings to mind classic experiences such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, The American Players Theatre, and House on the Rock.
Reedsburg, in the heart of bicycling country, features the Norman Rockwell Museum, and close by in Baraboo is the Circus World Museum and Devil’s Lake State Park. Baraboo is also very near Wisconsin Dells, a major destination for many tourists throughout the US and abroad. The Dells is one of three areas on the globe that has Precambrian rock formations. The commercial aspects of Wisconsin Dells may interest some, especially those families with children. These include water parks, water shows, miniature golf, and of course, shopping!
During peak season, continuous boat tours journey up and down the breathtaking Wisconsin River, transporting fascinated crowds of people. Witch’s Gulch, with its sandstone rock formations towering straight up hundreds of feet is a must see also, as well as the Parson’s Indian Trading Post and Museum. The impressive International Crane Foundation is also in the Dells area.
Onward south to Madison, our state capital, the stunning capital building dome is the focal point from which all else stems. This magnificent structure is indeed the heart of the city, with Lake Monona guarding it from the north and from the south. The well-known University of Wisconsin Madison covers a substantial portion of the south shore of Lake Mendota, lending its serenity to students as they study.
In the northeastern area of the region, the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the world, the Horicon Marsh, is the ideal place to visit to view the outstanding ecological wonders of the region. Stop at Horicon Marsh Boat Tours at Blue Heron Landing where guided boat tours and canoe rentals are offered.
There are as many different routes to take in South Central Wisconsin as there are lakes, and whatever you choose, you can’t lose. Be sure to venture off the main roads occasionally because our back roads are especially adventure-filled. The region has many rustic roads; replete with hairpin turns, hills, bumps… you name it. Our local color is colorful, indeed!
